BKC Class Schedule

From Dr. Ian Dunbar Veterinarian and Dog Behaviorist. “Bite inhibition must be established in puppyhood, before eighteen weeks of age, since it is difficult to instill bite inhibition in an adolescent or adult dog. Learning the skills and techniques to ensure your puppy develops a reliable bite inhibition and an ultra-soft mouth is the primary reason for you to attend off-leash puppy classes. Your puppy needs to play with other puppies. Playing with adult dogs at home or in the park is simply not sufficient.” Lure/Reward puppy training techniques are quick, easy, extremely effective and a whole lot of fun. Early puppy temperament training is crucial for a companion dog and teaching puppies basic manners early lays the foundation for long-term success.

Puppy I
(pups 8 weeks to 18 weeks)

Our Puppy Class focuses on teaching bite inhibition, socializing with unfamiliar humans, puppies and self camling, so be prepared for you and your family to get involved! You and your puppy will learn the basics, such as come, sit, stay, off (feet on floor) and leave it (get away from that). There will be discussion on house training and other basic issues that might crop up during your puppy's early months. See this web site for an example of a puppy class.

Puppy 2 (Pups that have completed Puppy 1)

Get control of your maturing and sometimes overpowering puppy! Build on skills from Puppy 1, increasing distractions, how to establish who sets the rules (you), how to communicate with your puppy through voice, body language, and canine language cues. Class format consists of discussion, demonstration, practice of new skills, playtime with other people and pups, and games. This hands-on class will get you and your family engaged in the fun.

Puppy Playtime
(New to BKC 8 to 18 weeks of age, if enrolled or past students of our puppy classes, dogs under 9 months)

BKC is offering playtime to dogs under 9 months of age, see for Rules and times. Those currently enrolled in BKC puppy classes may attend at no charge. For others the cost is $5 per session. Call or e-mail Lynda Nelson for schedule and registration. NO DROP INS ALLOWED, YOU MUST BE ON THE LIST TO ATTEND.

Class information

Please contact Lynda if you need a class. When we get 5 students, we will schedule a class to start. Don't wait until a session is listed.

BKC offers positive reinforcement training, and we ask that your puppy arrive with a plain buckle collar (no chain or choke collars, please). Our instructors have many years of experience, and are dedicated to promoting the best possible experience for you and your puppy. Although families are strongly encouraged to participate, we request that the primary handler of the puppy be a parent or person over the age of 11 years.

All BKC puppy classes are 7 weeks in length. Puppy classes fill rapidly, please apply as soon as possible. We will limit registration at 10 per puppy class, so please also indicate a second choice day on your application form. BKC reserves the option to cancel, combine or split classes to provide the optimum learning group of 5-10 puppies & handlers. If your first choice class is filled or does not have enough enrolled, we will call so you may select another time that particular class may be available.

Owners of dogs who missed our age cutoff please refer to the information about obedience classes, specifically Fundamentals for Obedience and Rally or Canine Good Citizen Classes.

Other Information

The AVSAB, American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior, has issued a position statement on Puppy Socialization. Summary: In general, puppies can start puppy socialization classes as early as 7-8 weeks of age. Puppies should receive a minimum of one set of vaccines at least 7 days prior to the first class and a first deworming. They should be kept up-to-date on vaccines throughout the class.
