BKC Class Schedule

Therapy Dog Training

BKC offers a unique class titled "Calm Dogs, Therapy Dogs". The purpose of the class is to offer those teams who want to work on calm acceptance of strangers, and other people-oriented activities, on their way to registration as a working therapy dog. There will be information about the 3 organizations that test and provide insurance for therapy dog visits.

The canine qualifications require all of the behaviors consistent with a team can pass a Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test. For the purposes of this class all work done during a CGC test would be done with a loose lead, etc. Sit, down, wait, off, come will all be reviewed, but not taught for the first time. A CGC certificate is not necessary to register or participate in this class.

Some class activities include:

  • working around medical equipment (people in wheelchairs),
  • approaching people in a variety of positions,
  • being calm around children and other distractions.
  • remaining calm around unusual human behavior
  • learning how to lift dogs up and down from platforms/tables
  • stepping over dogs

Tricks Class

Class to be held 6:00 PM- 6:45 PM Mondays running 8 weeks.

Standard fees apply. Non-members $100/session, Members: $50/session, Drop-in if space is available: $15/$7.50 per class.

No pre-requisites for the class. Any dog, old or young can learn a trick of some kind and learning tricks helps to build the dog/handler relationship.

Clicker training based, instructors may vary to get the best instructor for the month’s tricks.

Each week at least one new trick will be introduced. Participants will be expected to work on the tricks at home, but learn the techniques in class.

Tricks to teach will include participant requests as well as those instructors feel are teachable and useful for a family dog.

Musical Freestyle

Musical Freestyle class will introduce the dog and handler to this fun sport which incorporates music and training skills. Dogs will learn various freestyle "moves" while handlers learn about choosing music, choreographing a routine, and using freestyle to compliment other training disciplines or to enhance therapy or school visits.
