Therapy Dog Training

The purpose of the therapy dog class is to progress towards being ready to test to become a registered therapy dog team. There will be information about national organizations that test and provide insurance for therapy dog visits. 

Class topics include canine body language, stress and calming signals, and methods for and issues in working in therapeutic and community pet therapy environments. 

This is not a class for reactive or shy dogs.

Class activities include but are not limited to:

  • Working around medical equipment (people in wheelchairs, walkers, canes or crutches)
  • Approaching diverse people in a variety of physical positions
  • Being comfortable around a variety of distractions and settings
  • Tricks and techniques to facilitate interactions,
  • Handler skills to support your dog
  • Community outings
  • Socialization opportunities
  • Shadowing on therapy visits

Class Requirements

  • A Family Dog skills class and the AKC Canine Good Citizen skills/certification is required but dogs with equal skills may test out with the instructor before registering.
  • Instructor permission is required with emphasis on past and current socialization experiences, self control, and team therapy goals.
  • AKC Community Canine class is recommended.

$110 non-members
$55 members
